• 11 Things Horror Movies Have Taught Me! (Bloody Disgusting) - With items like "Being a virgin is a good thing" and "Do your research before buying a house," this hysterically on-point list will kill horror fans.
• When Defending a Movie Becomes Intellectual Genocide or Why Hating on Haters Makes You a Hater (Film School Rejects) - Robert Fure rants about how both film fans and critics seem to be more focused on calling people dumb for not liking what they like than actually talking about why they like it.
• 15 Female Directors Who Could Direct 'Catching Fire' Other Than the Actual Candidates (The Mary Sue) -  We know that a man has already been given the job, but we're still kind of hoping that the producers will change their minds and give a girl a chance to rep our girl, Katniss Everdeen.
• Taylor Swift in tune with Joni Mitchell drama (Variety) - We could drink a case of Swifty's country pop wine, but watch her play a Canadian folk legend? We're not so sure.
• /Film previews Universal Studios Hollywood's 'Transformers: The Ride' (/Film) - Take or leave the Michael Bay films out to rust under the heat of faux flames, this sounds kind of awesome.
  

The Fille Files (April 8 - 14)

REEL GREAT READS

• 'Django Unchained' synopsis explains Tarantino's latest for the spoiler-adverse (Slash Film) - Quentin has finally released some deets about his new flick, set to be released on Christmas Day and featuring Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz and Leo DiCaprio (as a slave owner!). Let's just say, it sounds off the chain.
• 'The Cabin the Woods' Gang: 10 Movies That Scare Us! (EW) - Joss Whedon and the cast of the much-anticipated, much hush-hyped flick talk about their creepiest moviegoing experiences, name-dropping some of our faves like Halloween and the original Thing. 
•  Who should direct 'Catching Fire'? (Women and Hollywood) - Since Hunger Games' director Gary Ross has decided not to stick around for the sequel, everyone seems to be taking a guess as to who they'll get to replace him. Like Women and Hollywood, we'd love to see Katniss from a female perspective.

• Glenn Close: 'People like Albert Nobbs deserve to have their stories told' (The Guardian) - A bit late, but Glenn Close talks to The Guardian about Albert Nobbs, one of the best (and most underrated) movies I saw last year.
• The Woman in Black to haunt cinemas again in Susan Hill sequel (The Guardian) - YES! A sequel to The Woman in Black! Put me down for tickets right now!
• Exclusive: Dumb and Dumber 2 Begins Production This September (Coming Soon) - And you can count me in for the first official sequel to Dumb and Dumber too!
• Adam Sandler's 'Jack and Jill' sweeps the 2011 Razzie Awards (EW) - Well obviously, Jack and Jill made a clean sweep at the Razzie, except for the awards that it shared with Sandler's other movie last year, Just Go With It. I guess when you're not a Sandler fan, you really don't get it.

WEEKEND WATCHES

• Titanic 3D - In memory of the 100th anniversary of the tragedy, James Cameron has re-released the classic love story in 3D, in case you haven't heard yet.
• American Reunion - The American Pie cast reunites at their high school reunion to find that some things never change.

TRAILER OF THE WEEK: To Rome With Love

Woody Allen's Italian answer to Midnight in Paris in four vignettes with a steller ensemble cast.

• 33 Things You Didn't Know About The Movie "Titanic" (BuzzFeed) - Ridiculous as they may seem, we assume they're true. They are, right?
• Great Mythological Movie Beasts (IGN) - For the sci-fi nerds like myself, a reminder of some of the coolest mythological monsters from some of our favourite films (and even some that sucked, ahem, The Clash of the Titans remake).
• Multiple New Child's Play Movies? (IGN) - Good news for those of you who couldn't get through the campiness of the original Child's Play (I sure couldn't), with rumours of a (hopefully less campy) remake and spin-off. Though really, how can you take a murderous little doll seriously.
• 50 Most Shocking Movie Deaths Of All Time (Total Film) - Warning: Kinda gross and sadistic. But it also includes some legitimately shocking, non-gory, narratively significant deaths.

WEEKEND WATCHES

• The Hunger Games - Because guess what, Mirror, Mirror doesn't look so great, and after the disappointment of The Clash of the Titans, I'm not going to suggest The Wrath of the Titans. Plus, besides the few of us who haven't seen it yet, I'm sure some of you would love to re-watch it.

TRAILER OF THE WEEK: Can I pick four? Let's go with House at the End of the Street for now.

Newest It-girl Jennifer Lawrence stars in the seemingly-backwards psychological thriller-horror.

• Venom Movie: How to Please Fans (IGN) - With talks of a Venom-centred movie, IGN makes some suggestions to the filmmakers on how make up for what Spider-Man 3's Venom lacked.
• Topher Grace Edited The ‘Star Wars’ Prequels Into One 85-Minute Movie and We Saw It (Slash Film) - Very cool. Very geeky. We wish we saw it too.
• Jason Segel Says He Won’t Write or Star in The Muppets Sequel (Collider) - If you loved The Muppets, this is sad news. If you loathed The Muppets (but really, who did?), you wouldn't see the sequel anyway. Seems like a lose-lose situation.
• Hasbro's 'Ouija' Movie Returns to Universal, Set for 2013 Release (The Hollywood Reporter) - The found-footage movie about the evil "witchboard" (note: 1986's Witchboard also featured a plot around Ouija) is back in the works! And it sounds amazing.

• Paul Rudd and Jimmy Fallon Make Posters For 7 Fake Masterpieces (Next Movie) - Not exactly a "read," but it's hilarious! If you missed Fallon's show this week with Rudd, check out these posters for the faux movies they starred in together.
  
• Cohen's Oscar Stunt: Funny or Not? (IGN) - Everyone's been asking. Turns out, most of us enjoyed it, whether in praise of Cohen or laughter at the outcome.
• Why You Want to See 'The Hobbit' (Even If You Don't Love Fantasy) (Next Movie) - Just in case you haven't picked up on it yet, I'm (Michelle) a huge LotR fan and as The Hobbit approaches, I'll only be talking about it more and more.
• The Humble Yet Amusing Early Works of Jean Dujardin (Next Movie) - Clearly, it's been a great week for Jean Dujardin after his Best Actor win at the Oscars and The Artist's sweep, so what better time to look back at his amusing beginnings. (And a great week for reads from Next Movie.)
• A Timeline of Lindsay Lohan’s Many Professional ‘Last Chances’ (Vulture) - While Vulture may call it her "last chances," Lilo fans (myself included) call it her slow comeback.

• Oscar voters overwhelmingly white, male (Los Angeles Times) - This new report proves what we've thought we've known for years: that the Academy is an old boy's club and thus, possibly biased in its ultimate selections.
• The Best Picture nominees as infographics (Vulture) - A visual treat for both Oscar lovers and haters, featuring a shit pie graph (The Help) and a line graph documenting the ups and downs of George Clooney's two-faced ("Cool Dad" vs. "Sex Symbol") career.
• The five ways the Oscars have ruined my life (Hello Giggles) - Erin Long speaks to her love/hate relationship with the Oscars with a brutal honesty (themed foods DO take over your life) we can totally, unashamedly relate to.
• Is the Academy using the Oscars to promote their own creditability? (EW) - In this video, EW critics Owen Gleiberman and Lisa Schwarzbaum ask if this year's Oscar winners should represent quality (The Artist! Jean DuJardin!), popularity (George Clooney! The Help!) or both (Brad Pitt!).
• Great books, awful movies: A brief history (The Globe and Mail) - In honour of all the books-turned-movies nominated for best picture, The Globe looks at some of the literary adaptations of the past that ruined the originals (though we can't say we always agree, ahem, Troy).
• ALSO: Maude Apatow's interview with Paul Rudd - Judd Apatow's daughter interviews the adorable everyman, asking him pertinent questions like "What was your barmitzvah like?"

•  The Ship of Fools (Roger Ebert's Journal) - One of all-time favourite male movie critics, uh, ships one of our (or, at least Emily's) favourite sick day/Sunday/everyday movies, the Celine Dion soundtrack-set epicness that is Titanic. (Don't tell me I'm the only one anxiously anticipating the 3D release!)
• Inside the all-black (almost!) reading of 'Reservoir Dogs' (EW) Jason Reitman keeps staging these awesome-sounding, star-studded cold readings of classic screenplays (see also: The Princess Bride, The Breakfast Club). But we're particularly intrigued by this one, which changes up the race of the cast of Tarantino's ultra-violent first opus, subbing in Terrence Howard, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Laurence Fishburne for Michael Madsen, Tim Roth and  Harvey Keitel.

• 50 Greatest Lord Of The Rings Moments (Total Film) - If you love LotR, as one of us filles does, you will love this. A quick run through some of our favourite moments in the trilogy amid all the hype about The Hobbit. (But of course, us LotR fans will also watch all three again before December.)
• 5 Big Questions for Movie Geeks in 2012 (Screen Rant) - Very important questions for very nerdy people, including Q's about The Hobbit, The Avengers and other great and geeky movies.

• Gos-tronomy: The 25 Best Ryan Gosling Moments of 2011 (GQ) – While this isn’t really a film story, it features one of our favourite movie and feminist icons of the moment, Breaker High grad and Drive/Crazy Stupid Love/Ides of March star, Ryan Gosling. We just can’t get enough and this is precisely why. Hey girl .... want to get us a Drive Operation game for Christmas?

• Gender inequality still has a starring role in Hollywood, USC study finds (Los Angeles Times) - This must-read piece talks of research that confirms our worst fears: gender stereotyping still has a huge hand in Hollywood and the production of most major features. (For one terribly disheartening example, only 32.8% of speaking roles in the 100 biggest blockbusters of 2009 went to women.) At the same time, it confirms one of our main beliefs and driving forces for creating this blog: women make up more than half of ticket sales.
• The best scenes in the worst movies (A.V. Club) - As anyone who has read our Terribly Awesome! column knows, we love terrible movies just as much as great ones, at least when you can find unintentional humour in them. This week, the peeps at the A.V. Club look into scenes that save otherwise shitty movies.  
• Kristen Wiig: Bro of the Year (GQ via Jon Hamm) -  Although we're not sure we're loving the overly sexy photo they chose to go with the story, this short piece about the Bridesmaids star and writer's immense talent, penned by co-star and the mad man behind Don Draper, Jon Hamm, is a sweet little read.
• A Thanksgiving Typtophantastic Triple Feature (Hello Giggles) - A few festive-themed flicks are served up for our Southern neighbours. Although, we would be remiss if we didn’t point out the exclusion of one of the best underrated turkey day movies, which features Katie Holmes’ one really great performance, Pieces of April.

Categories of promotional poster cliches include "Back to Back," "Nature is Blue" and "Tiny People on Beach, Giant Heads in the Clouds."

• Friday the 13th: A Retrospective (IGN) - It's probably evident that we're big Halloween fans. But we also love Friday the 13th. IGN reminds of why the slasher series was (and still is) so great, with ratings, gore level and body counts.
• Gonzo gone wrong: Why heroic drinking doesn't make for heroic characters (The Grid TO) - Despite Hunter S. Thompson's adoration, Jason Anderson explains why characters in films of his semi-autobiographical works don't yield the same response.
• Scores that Scare: The 8 Most Frightening Movie Soundtracks (Video Word Made Flesh) - The impact of sound in horror cannot be understated. Here's a list of some of the films that did it best.
• Here's how to get a walk on role in Joss Whedon's next movie (The Mary Sue) - The geek lord (creator of Buffy, Angel, Firefly and the new Avengers movie) is offering up a guest spot in his movie, In Your Eyes, to the highest bidder on eBay. WHY DON'T WE HAVE MONEY?!
• I gave 'A Very Harold and Kumar 3D Christmas' an A. And yes, the movie deserves it! But no, that doesn't mean it's 'The Hurt Locker' or 'Citizen Kane' (EW) - This is why we love Owen Gleiberman. He's not afraid to rate his films on actual enjoyment as well as quality. This quote alone pretty much sums up our feelings about film too: "If we can't ever say that our lowbrow popcorn really does taste great, truly great - maybe, in some cases, as great as awards season haute cuisine - then we're just being dishonest about what draws us to movies in the first place."

• Surviving Progress - A doc comparing our obsession with progress to the defeat of civilizations past, featuring the perspectives of Stephen Hawking, Jane Goodall, David Suzuki and Margaret Atwood, among others.
• Tower Heist - The movie proclaiming that the old Eddie Murphy is back, alongside Ben Stiller, Matthew Broderick, Téa Leoni, Casey Affleck and Gabourey Sidibe.
• A Very Harold and Kumar 3D Christmas - Doesn't it just  look like a perpetually fried festive miracle?

• Like The Best Zombies, VHS Just Won’t Die (The New York Times) - A fresh perspective amid the booming 3D and HQ age: VHS still has an aesthetic edge in the horror genre.
• 9 Movies That Prove Shakespeare Is Cool (NextMovie) - With Anonymous out this week, NextMovie reminds us of other amazing Shakespeare-inspired films. Because let me tell you, Shakespeare is cool.

• Martha Marcy May Marlene - One of our fave films at TIFF this year about a girl making her way out of a cult. And it stars the only Olsen sister who can act.

• Playing promiscuous is no easy role for Hollywood's leading ladies (The Grid TO) - Martin Morrow ponders why leading women have rarely been allowed to pull off the promiscuous role without actually being the “good girl” in the end, and how the release of Dirty Girl is challenging that.
• Jason Reitman gathers Jennifer Garner, Aaron Paul and more for star-studded reading of ‘The Breakfast Club’ (EW) - Some lucky bastards in LA got to see John Hughes’ best movie the way the coolest semi-Canadian director would have wanted to see it—with Jennifer Garner taking on Molly Ringwald’s Claire, Dawson Leery (er, James Van Der Beek) playing Andy (Emilio Estevez) and Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul apparently topping Judd Nelson as the scary-sexy John Bender. We’d take detention every Saturday from now on to have seen that go down.
• Criticism as old as criticism itself (Toronto Star) - Film critic Peter Howell analyzes Pauline Kael’s 1980s assertion that “rotten pictures are making money,” in light of this week’s blockbuster-style crop (Paranormal Activity 3, a new Johnny English movie, The Three Musketeers 3D), arguing that while there are always bad just-for-the-money movies, there are plenty of good ones too.
• Rooney Mara: Playing with Fire (Vogue) - This indepth profile of the actress who has been chosen to be Lisbeth Salander in the David Fincher’s American adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, discusses the double standards modern actresses have to face, explaining why Scarlett Johannson didn’t get the role (Fincher says she was too sexy) and that controversial poster.

• Paranormal Actvity 3 - The third instalment in the home video demonic horror series couldn’t be more lame than the second (Flying babies! Doors flying open!) could it? All we know is the original literally kept us up the night we saw it, so if this has any hint of that film’s scariness, we’re bound to be pleasantly creeped to the core.
• Dirty Girl - Have you read Martin Morrow’s Grid TO piece above yet?

TRAILER OF THE WEEK: Piranha 3DD

As if we weren’t already sold on this perfectly-titled sure-to-be instant classic, here’s the first teaser trailer, complete with a ‘Hoff cameo and what looks like Ving Rhames doing his best Cherry Darling impression.

• Mad About Her: Pauline Kael, Loved and Loathed (The New York Times) - A. O. Scott and Manohla Dargis in a convo about the life and work of film critic (and our hero) Pauline Kael.
• 25 of the Coolest Horror Posters Ever (IGN) - Perhaps the only thing more hilariously awesome than these retro horror film posters are the tag lines. Some of our faves: “Herbert West has a good head on his shoulders... And another one on his desk.” and “You can't trust your mother ..your best friend ...the neighbor next door. One minute they're perfectly normal, the next... RABID.”
• Man Who Pelted Tiger Woods with Hot Dog Blames ‘Drive’ (EW) - The title says it all. “As soon as the movie ended, I thought to myself, ‘I have to do something courageous and epic. I have to throw a hot dog on the green in front of Tiger.’”
• R.I.P., The Movie Camera: 1888-2011 (Salon) - The digital revolution propels forward and has finally taken the film movie camera down with it as three major film camera manufacturers have ceased production in the last year. This piece reflects on what once was and what may soon become moviemaking.

WEEKEND WATCHES

• The Thing - With horror films so strangely scarce this month, we’ll take what we can get. Luckily, this sci-fi horror prequel/remake doesn’t seem so bad. (And if you haven't seen the original, check out Emily’s Never Seen It! Sunday.)
• Footloose - Let’s hear it for the angry warehouse dancing, tractor chicken and burgundy suits! Again!

• Why do we want to see movies like ‘The Human Centipede 2’? (EW) - Entertainment Weekly critic Owen Gleiberman tries to understand why he and so many other morbidly-curious cinephiles are dying to sit through the supposedly sickening sequel to The Human Centipede, which he says “could be the sickest B-movie ever made” and “would have the Marquis de Sade gagging into his popcorn.”
• Film Circuit is Being Sued for Marketing ‘Drive’ Too Well (Film School Rejects) - Apparently a woman is suing FilmDistrict and the theatre she saw Drive at, because it didn’t live up to the Fast and Furious feel of the trailer. (Oh, and cause she thinks it’s antisemitic?!) If people sued production companies every time a trailer wasn’t a fair representation of the actual movie, Hollywood would be bankrupt.
• Hand Drawn Homage to Classic Films (NY Times) - A profile on Mondo, a company that works alongside the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, to produce badass reimaginings of old and new school movie posters and counts Guillermo del Toro (!) as one of its fans.
